Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Camp Harding was a special summer resort located west of Broadmoor Park in Colorado Springs. It was found right at the entrance of Cheyenne Canon. This camp was one of several places in the early 1900s where people could go to improve their health. Many people visited the Pikes Peak Region hoping to feel better.

What Was Camp Harding?

Camp Harding offered a place for visitors to stay, like a hotel. It was known as a "boarding house" and a summer resort. People came here to relax and enjoy the fresh air. The area was popular for health resorts because of its clean environment.

Who Ran Camp Harding?

In 1903, a woman named Anna E. Harding was in charge of Camp Harding. She was the "proprietor," which means she owned or managed the resort. There were also other staff members, like a coachman and domestic helpers, who worked at the camp.

What Did Camp Harding Look Like?

Camp Harding was located on West Cheyenne Road. To reach it, visitors would pass through a gate with a gatekeeper. This gate led to a special road for carriages that went towards the Cheyenne Canons.

The camp itself had a charming look. There was a "rustic bridge" that led to its buildings. Camp Harding featured structures with "red roofs" surrounded by tall pine trees. The resort included a single-story cottage and about seven tents for guests to stay in. There was also a two-story brick home with a striped awning on its porch.

Camp Harding Today

The area where Camp Harding once stood is now part of the larger Colorado Springs metropolitan area. While the camp itself is no longer there, its history reminds us of how people sought health and relaxation in the beautiful Pikes Peak region long ago.
