Campari is a special type of hybrid tomato. It's famous for being very juicy and sweet, with a low amount of sourness. These tomatoes are a deep red color. They are bigger than tiny cherry tomatoes but smaller and rounder than common plum tomatoes.
You often see Campari tomatoes sold in stores still on their vines. This way of selling them, called "tomato-on-the-vine" (TOV), has become very popular. Different kinds of Campari tomatoes exist, but they all share similar good qualities. One common type is called Mountain Magic. Because Campari tomatoes are hybrids, their seeds can be quite expensive.
What Makes Campari Tomatoes Special?
Campari tomatoes are known for several great features. They are very juicy and have a high sugar level, which makes them taste sweet. They also have low acidity, meaning they aren't too sour. This combination gives them a delicious, balanced flavor.
Campari tomatoes are also not "mealy." This means they have a firm, smooth texture and don't feel grainy or dry when you eat them. Their deep red color is another sign of their ripeness and good quality.
Growing Campari Tomatoes
A typical Campari tomato plant grows to be about 6 to 8 feet (1.8 to 2.4 meters) tall. It takes about 70 to 80 days for the tomatoes to grow and become ready to pick. This means you can enjoy fresh Campari tomatoes fairly quickly after planting.
The plants have what are called "regular leaves." They are also strong and can resist a plant sickness called the tobacco mosaic virus. This helps the plants stay healthy and produce lots of tasty tomatoes.
