Why Was Canby's Cross Built?
Canby's Cross was put up to remember General Edward Canby. He was a general in the United States Army. In 1873, there was a conflict called the Modoc War between the Modoc people and the U.S. Army. Leaders from both sides met to try and make peace. During one of these meetings, General Canby was killed by Captain Jack, a leader of the Modoc tribe. Captain Jack was later punished for this act. The cross serves as a reminder of this difficult time and the efforts made to find peace.
