History of Candela
Candela was started a long time ago, in 1690. It was founded by a general named Alonso de León. He named it San Bernardino de la Candela. It began as a "mission," which was a special settlement often built by religious groups.
Fun Places to Visit in Candela
Candela is a great place to visit because of its beautiful mountains and wide-open deserts. There are also three cool water spots where you can relax and have fun: Los Carrisitos, Las Lajitas, and El Ojo de Agua.
Los Carrisitos: Mountain Pools
Los Carrisitos has natural pools filled with clear water from the mountains. It's a perfect spot for a carne asada, which is a Mexican-style barbecue. Imagine grilling delicious food by the cool mountain water!
Las Lajitas: River Rocks
Las Lajitas is part of the Candela River. This part of the river is special because of its unique rock shapes. That's how it got its name, "Las Lajitas," which means "the little flat stones."
El Ojo de Agua: Warm Spring
El Ojo de Agua is a natural spring with warm water. This water is heated deep underground. Many people enjoy taking a bath here, as it's said to be good for your skin.
Ranches and Chapels
Candela also has many large ranches nearby. One special ranch is Santa Lucia de Sanmiguel, a hidden gem among the mountains. Like many towns in isolated mountain areas, Candela has a strong religious culture. Near the Santa Lucia ranch, there's a tiny, open-air chapel. It's built to honor the Virgen of Guadalupe. Ranchers and townspeople often visit this chapel to pray and leave flowers or rosaries for their loved ones.
