Candelo is a small town in south-eastern New South Wales, Australia. It is part of the Bega Valley Shire, which is a local government area. Candelo is about 448 kilometers (278 miles) south of Sydney, the state capital. It is also 38 kilometers (24 miles) north-west of Eden, a popular place for holidays by the coast.

In 2011, about 732 people lived in Candelo. The town was named by Peter Imlay, who was the first European settler in this area. He named his house "Candelo House" in 1834, after a town in Italy.

Candelo's History

The first Europeans settled in the Candelo area in the 1830s. The village of Candelo started to grow in the 1860s. This happened because of a new law in 1861 called the New South Wales Land Act. This law made it easier for more people to settle and live in the area.

Candelo Markets

The Candelo Markets are held on the first Sunday of every month. These markets started in 1982. They help raise money for projects that benefit the Candelo community. The markets are a "dog-free zone," meaning pets are not allowed.

Sapphire Speedway

Sapphire Speedway is a race track located near Candelo. The track is 600 meters (about 1,968 feet) long. It has a special surface made of clay and granite. Many different types of races happen here. These include RSA Limited Sedans, SSA Production Sedans, Junior Sedans, and Dirt Karts.
