The Candler Oak Tree is a very old and special tree in Savannah, Georgia. Experts believe it started growing way back in the 1700s. This makes it one of the oldest living landmarks in that area.

This impressive tree stands about 54 feet tall. Its trunk is 17 feet around, and it measures 63 inches across. The branches spread out very wide, covering an area of about 110 feet.

Another very large tree in Georgia is a Red Oak. It is located near Palmetto, Georgia. This Red Oak is even older, estimated to be between 350 and 450 years old. Its trunk is 10 feet across!

Where to Find the Candler Oak Tree

The Candler Oak Tree is located on the property of the Savannah College of Art and Design. You can find it at Ruskin Hall, which is at 516 Drayton Street, Savannah, GA 31401. The tree is also very close to Forsyth Park, a well-known spot in Savannah.

The History of the Candler Oak Tree

In 1984, a group called the Savannah Tree Foundation did something amazing. They helped create the first ever "conservation easement" for a single tree in the United States. This special agreement protects the Candler Oak. It means the tree and a large area around it (about 6,804 square feet) are safe from being built on. This helps keep the tree healthy and protected.

Later, in 2001, the Georgia Urban Forest Council gave the tree a special title. They called it a Georgia Landmark and Historic Tree. This shows how important and unique the Candler Oak is.

In 2012, a school called Savannah Law School bought the land where the tree stands. They took steps to protect the tree even more. They put up fences around it and made sure there was enough space for its lowest branches. They even had security cameras watching over the tree. The Candler Oak was so important to them that it became part of the law school's logo!

Sadly, the law school later closed down. Now, the property and the Candler Oak are owned by the Savannah College of Art and Design. The tree continues to be a cherished part of the area.
