Canicross is an exciting sport where you run cross-country with your dog. It started in Europe as a way for sled dog teams to train when there wasn't snow. Now, it's a popular sport on its own across Europe, especially in the UK, and also in the United States.

In canicross, you can run with one or two dogs. Your dog is always connected to you. You wear a special belt around your waist. Your dog wears a harness designed for pulling. An elastic line, like a bungee cord, connects you both. This line helps reduce any sudden jerks for both you and your dog as they pull you along.

Originally, canicross dogs were often breeds like huskys or malamutes, known for pulling sleds. Today, many different breeds enjoy canicross. This includes mixed breeds, small terriers, and even large dogs like rottweilers and standard poodles. Some dogs are naturally great at running and pulling steadily over long distances.

Canicross Around the World

This section will explore how the sport of canicross has grown in different regions.

Canicross in Europe

Canicross has become very popular in Europe. The first canicross event in the UK took place in 2000. CaniX UK organized the first UK National Championship in the 2006/07 season. The 2015/16 season marked their 10th championship event. Over 2,500 dogs and runners have participated in more than 250 CaniX events in the UK.

In March 2008, CaniX UK held the first canicross event at Crufts. Crufts is the largest dog show in the world. More than 100 runners and their dogs took part. In October 2012, CaniX UK also hosted the first European Canicross Championships in the UK. This big event took place in Cirencester, Gloucestershire. The British Sleddog Sports Federation (BSSF) represents the UK in the International Canicross Federation.

Canicross events happen all over the UK and Europe. Sled dog organizations and canicross clubs often host them. Many regular running events also welcome participants with their dogs. The distances for these races can vary greatly. They range from just one mile up to 28 miles or even longer.

Canicross in Italy

In Italy, canicross is officially recognized by the CSEN. CSEN is a sports promotion organization officially recognized by the Italian National Olympic Committee. There is also a private circuit called FISC that supports canicross.

Canicross in the United States

In the United States, canicross is sometimes called urban mushing, caniXC, or caniX. It is not as widely known as in Europe. However, it is becoming more popular, especially in cooler areas. Organizations like North American Canicross are helping it grow. The United States Federation of Sleddog Sports and local sled dog clubs also support the sport. Kenosha Running Company is another group involved.

Several official events are held throughout the year. North American Canicross offers a special Titling Program. Members can record their running mileage and race results. They can then earn special challenge coins for their achievements.
