Canon Sportif de Yaoundé, often called Canon Yaoundé, is a professional football club from Yaoundé, the capital city of Cameroon. The club started in 1930 and plays its home games at Stade Ahmadou Ahidjo.

About Canon Yaoundé

Canon Yaoundé is one of the most famous football teams in Cameroon. They are known for their exciting style of play. The club has a long history and is a big part of Cameroonian football.

A Golden Era

The 1970s and 1980s were the best times for Canon Yaoundé. During these years, they were a super strong team in both Cameroon and across Africa. They won many important titles. This included eight national championships and eight Cameroonian Cups. They also won three African Champions' Cups and one African Cup Winners' Cup. This made them one of the top clubs on the continent.

Club Rivalries

Canon Yaoundé has some big rivals. Their main rival is Tonnerre Kalara Club (TKC), also from Yaoundé. Games between Canon and TKC are called the Yaoundé derby. These matches are always very exciting. Interestingly, TKC actually started from Canon many years ago. Another rival is Union Sportive de Douala. These clubs helped make Cameroonian football famous in Africa.

Famous Players and Coaches

Over the years, many talented players have played for Canon Yaoundé. One of the most famous was their captain, Theophile Abega. Another important player was Jean-Paul Akono. He later became the coach of Cameroon's national team, the "Indomitable Lions." He led them to win a gold medal at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.

The club has also had notable coaches. These include Oscar Eyoum and Bienvenu Lessomo.

Recent Times

For a while, Canon Yaoundé faced some tough times. They were not playing in the top national or international leagues. This was due to some problems with how the club was run. However, they have been working hard to get back to the top. In recent seasons, like 2020/21 and 2021/22, they have shown a strong desire to win the MTN Elite One title again. This is thanks to new changes in their management and finances.
