About the Shell
The shell of Cantharidus capillaceus can be anywhere from 13 mm to 28 mm long. That's about half an inch to just over an inch.
Shell Shape and Texture
The shell has an oval-cone shape. It feels almost smooth, but if you look closely, you might see very fine lines that spiral around it. These lines create tiny, shallow grooves.
Shell Color
The shell can be a deep purple or a reddish-grey color. Sometimes, it has a few small white dots. The very tip of the shell, called the apex, is usually pink. The outer layer of the shell is thin and often shiny, but it can rub off easily.
Inside the Shell
The opening of the shell, called the aperture, is less than half the length of the entire shell. It's oval-shaped and looks shiny and colorful on the inside, like a rainbow. The outer edge of the opening is sharp and has tiny dents.
Where It Lives
This sea snail is found only in New Zealand. It lives in the waters near Auckland and the Campbell Islands.
