Cantharidus crenelliferus is a type of small sea snail. It's a marine mollusk that belongs to the Trochidae family, also known as "top snails." These snails live in the ocean.
About This Snail's Shell
This snail's shell can grow up to 10 millimeters (about 0.4 inches) tall. It has a tall, cone-like shape. The shell is reddish and often has red spots. The very tip of the shell, called the apex, is also red.
The shell's spiral turns, called whorls, are flat. They have many small, raised lines called lirae. These lines are wavy or bumpy, which is what "crenulate" means. The lines also go across the shell. The seams between the whorls, called sutures, have slanted stripes.
The main, largest part of the shell is called the body whorl. It has a slightly angled shape. The bottom of the shell is a bit rounded. The opening of the shell, called the aperture, is somewhat square-shaped. Inside, it is white. The central pillar of the shell, known as the columella, is white and curved. It looks like it's cut off at its base.
Where It Lives
This sea snail lives only in Australia. You can find it off the coast of Queensland.
