The Canty House, also known as "The Magnolia," is a special old house. You can find it on the campus of West Virginia State University in Institute, West Virginia. This historic building is located in Kanawha County, West Virginia.
Discovering Canty House
The Canty House has a rich history. It was once the home of "Colonel" James M. Canty. He was one of the first teachers at the West Virginia Colored Institute. This institute later became West Virginia State University.
How Old Is This House?
The Canty House was first built around the year 1900. Back then, it was a simple, two-story farmhouse made of wood. It looked quite different from how it does today.
Its Beautiful Style
In 1923, the house was changed and updated. It was remodeled into the beautiful Classical Revival style you see now. This style makes the house look grand and important.
The house has some cool features:
- It has two-story porches on its sides. These are called "galleries."
- There's a special front section with a triangular roof. This is known as a "pedimented pavilion."
- A tall, two-story porch, called a portico, stands at the front.
- This portico is held up by two large, fancy columns. These columns are in the Corinthian order style, which means they have detailed tops.
A Place of History
The Canty House is recognized as an important historical site. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. This list includes buildings, sites, and objects that are important to American history. Being on this list helps protect the house and its story for future generations.
