Cap de Cavalleria Ecomuseum facts for kids
The Cap de Cavalleria Ecomuseum is a special place located on the northern coast of Menorca. Menorca is a beautiful island in the Balearic Islands of Spain. This museum is near Cavalleria Cape and the old port of Sanitja. It's a great spot to learn about nature and history!
What is the Ecomuseum?
An ecomuseum is a museum that focuses on a specific area, showing how people and nature live together. The Cap de Cavalleria Ecomuseum helps protect, study, and share information about the natural and cultural treasures of the Cavalleria area and the port of Sanitja.
History of the Ecomuseum
The Ecomuseum started in 1997. It was created by a group called “San Nitja. Gestión del Patrimonio Mediterráneo.” This group is a non-profit organization, meaning they work to help the community, not to make money.
Their main goal is to look after the amazing things found in this area. They study many different parts of the region, including:
- Geology: How the land was formed, like rocks and soil layers.
- Biology: The local animals and plants that live there.
- Environment: How to keep the area healthy, especially with visitors like tourists.
- Ethnology: Old ways of life, like traditional lime kilns (ovens for making lime), dry stone walls, and the lighthouse.
- History and Archaeology: Ancient ruins, such as a Roman military fort, an old Roman city called Sanisera, and even a medieval mosque.
One of the most exciting parts is the archaeology. Experts have been digging at the port of Sanitja. They found a Roman military fort from the 1st century BC (which means before the year 0). They also found parts of the Roman city of Sanisera, which was used from the 1st century BC all the way to the 6th century AD (after the year 0).
Visiting the Ecomuseum
When you visit the Ecomuseum, you start at the Santa Teresa building. Inside, you can learn all about the area. They have cool videos, small models of the landscape, and real objects found during the archaeological digs at Sanitja.
There's a special exhibition called “Discover the North!” It opened in 2005 and shows you everything about the area. It's translated into six languages, so many people can enjoy it: Catalan, Spanish, English, German, Italian, and French.
After seeing the exhibition inside, you can explore the area outside! The museum offers a free guide called “7 routes.” These routes start right outside the museum. They help you discover the most important natural and historical spots in the landscape, making your visit even more exciting.
