Capahosic: A Place with Early American History

Capahosic might seem like a quiet place today, but it holds a special spot in early American history. It was once a significant Native American village.

The Story of John Smith and Chief Powhatan

In 1607, a famous English explorer named John Smith had an important encounter with Chief Powhatan. Chief Powhatan was the powerful leader of many Native American tribes in the region, including the people who lived in the village of Capahosic.

After John Smith was released from being held captive by some of Powhatan's people, Chief Powhatan showed him great respect. He even treated John Smith like his own son! As a sign of this respect, Chief Powhatan gave John Smith the village of Capahosic. He also gave Smith a special name, "Nantaquod", which was a great honor. This event highlights the complex relationships between the early English settlers and the Native American tribes in Virginia.
