Capilla de la Caridad (Algeciras) facts for kids
The Chapel of the Charity (which in Spanish is called Capilla de la Caridad) is a Roman Catholic church building in Villa Nueva, a town in Algeciras, Spain. It's a special place of worship.
A Look Back in Time
The Chapel of the Charity was built a long time ago, in 1768. It was located in a place called Plaza Juan de Lima, right next to the old Charity Hospital. The chapel has a simple design with one main room, called a nave. Its front, or facade, has a main door with special columns called Doric pilasters on each side.
A special sign on the door tells us that the chapel was built with money donated by many people. This is called "public subscription." For many years, during the 1700s, the chapel was dedicated to the Virgen del Carmen. She is known as the patron saint of sailors. This was fitting because the chapel was close to the port at that time.
Sadly, in 1931, the chapel was attacked and robbed. Many valuable items were hidden away to keep them safe. However, most of the religious statues and pictures inside the chapel were destroyed during this event.
