A Look at the Chapel of the Charity
When Was It Built?
The Chapel of the Charity was built a long time ago, in the year 1768. It stands in a place called Plaza Juan de Lima. This chapel was originally connected to the old Charity Hospital in Algeciras.
What Does It Look Like?
The chapel has a simple design with one main room, called a nave. Its front, or facade, features a main door. This door is decorated with special columns called Doric pilasters on each side. There is also a plaque on the door. This plaque tells visitors that the chapel was built thanks to donations from many people. This is known as "public subscription."
Who Was It Dedicated To?
During the 1700s, the chapel was dedicated to the Virgen del Carmen. She is known as the patron saint of seafarers, or sailors. This dedication made sense because the chapel was very close to the port at that time.
A Time of Trouble
In 1931, the chapel faced some difficult times. During a period of unrest, the chapel was damaged. Many valuable items were hidden away to protect them. However, most of the religious images inside the chapel were unfortunately destroyed during these events.
