Capitol Broadcasting Tower Columbia facts for kids
Capitol Broadcasting Tower Broadway is a very tall structure, about 533 meters (1,750 feet) high. It is a guyed tower, which means it's held up by strong cables called "guy wires" that are anchored to the ground. This tower is used for sending out TV signals and is located near Broadway, North Carolina, USA.
The current tower was built between 2002 and 2003. It replaced an older tower that was damaged in a plane crash. The original tower was also 533 meters tall and was built in 1985. It helped broadcast signals for a TV station called WKFT TV 40, which was based in Fayetteville. It also served as a backup tower for WRAL-TV in Raleigh.
The Plane Crash and Rebuilding
The first Capitol Broadcasting Tower was destroyed on March 14, 2002. A small courier plane accidentally flew into it, causing the tower to fall.
After the crash, Capitol Broadcasting rebuilt the main tower structure. The parts that send out the TV signals, like the transmitter and antenna, were replaced by Bahakel Communications. This company owned the WKFT TV station at that time. Soon after the new tower was finished, WKFT was sold to another company called Univision. The station then changed its name to WUVC.
Where the Tower Is Located
The tower is located close to the border between Harnett County and Lee County in North Carolina. The main part of the tower stands in Harnett County. However, some of the guy wires that hold it up, and the town of Broadway itself, are actually in Lee County.
