The Capitol Diner is a super cool historic diner located at 431 Union Street in Lynn, Massachusetts. It was built way back in 1928 by a company called the J. G. Brill Company. People believe it's the very last diner still open that this company ever made! Because it's so special, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1999.

What is the Capitol Diner?

The Capitol Diner is a famous old restaurant. It looks like a long, narrow building, much like a train car. Diners like this were very popular in the past. They offered quick and tasty meals.

Where is the Capitol Diner located?

You can find the Capitol Diner in downtown Lynn, Massachusetts. It's in an area called Central Square. The diner is close to the Lynn train station. It sits on Union Street, near the elevated train tracks.

The diner is built on a plot of land about 1900 square feet (176 square meters). It has a brick foundation. Part of the foundation is even made of glass bricks! Behind the diner, there's a small brick building. This building holds the kitchen. The rest of the area is a nice courtyard. There's a low brick wall along the sidewalk. A walkway leads to the kitchen and the back entrance of the diner.

How old is the Capitol Diner?

The Capitol Diner was built in 1928. It has been serving food for a very long time! The building itself is quite old. It still has many of its original features inside. Even after a small fire in 1978, it was repaired and kept its classic look.

Who built the Capitol Diner?

The diner unit was built by the Wason Manufacturing Company. This company was based in Massachusetts. It was a part of the J. G. Brill Company, which was from Philadelphia. The diner was placed permanently on its spot by 1934. It had its foundation and kitchen building already in place.

What is special about its history?

Before the Capitol Diner, there was a "lunch wagon" at this spot in 1898. When the diner opened in 1928, it was first called the "Miss Lynn Diner." In 1938, it was sold to a new owner. That's when it got its current name, the "Capitol Diner." It was named after the Capitol Theatre, which used to be across the street.

The Capitol Diner is very important because it's thought to be the last working diner made by the Brill Company in the United States. The diner has been owned by the same family since 1938. Today, Robert Fennell is the owner.
