Caprock is a small, unincorporated community located in Lea County, New Mexico, United States. An unincorporated community is a place that isn't officially a town or city. It doesn't have its own local government. Caprock sits on a high, flat area of land, about 47 miles east of Roswell. A main road, U.S. Route 380, goes right through it.
History of Caprock
Caprock was founded in 1913 by a person named Edward Crossland. He was the one who planted the cottonwood trees in the area. These trees are often found near water sources.
In 1916, a post office was opened in Caprock. This meant people could send and receive mail there. However, the post office is now closed. The community also had a school, but it closed in 1927. This often happens when not enough families live in an area to keep a school open.
Caprock Today
Today, Caprock is a very quiet place. It mainly consists of a country store, which doesn't sell gasoline. There are also two ranches nearby. A tall TV transmission tower stands in the area. This tower helps send television signals to homes.
