Discover the Historic Currier House!

The Captain Jonathan Currier House is a special building. It shows us what homes looked like a long time ago. It was built almost 300 years ago in 1742. This makes it a very old and important part of New Hampshire's history. It is the oldest house in the Currierville area. This area was once a big farming community.

What Does the House Look Like?

You can find the Captain Jonathan Currier House at a three-way intersection. This is where Hilldale Avenue, Currier Street, and Lone Goose Road meet. The house faces south, looking towards this intersection.

It is a two-and-a-half-story building. It is made of wood. The roof slopes down on two sides, which is called a side-gable roof. There is a brick chimney right in the middle of the house. The outside walls are covered with clapboards.

The front of the house has five sections, or "bays." The main door is in the center. It has simple flat columns on each side. Above the door, there is a small window called a transom window. A decorative frame, or cornice, sits on top. A single-story addition extends from the back of the house. It runs at an angle, parallel to Hillside Avenue. This house is a good example of the Georgian style of architecture. This style was popular when the house was built.

Who Lived Here? The Currier Family Story

Captain Jonathan Currier built this house around 1742. His family was one of the first to settle in the western part of South Hampton. In fact, the area is named Currierville because of them!

This house is the oldest one still standing in Currierville. This area was very important for farming in the 1700s and 1800s. The people who lived here, including the Currier family, were close to Newton, New Hampshire. They even asked the state government two times to become part of Newton. However, their requests were not successful.
