The Capt. Richard Strong House is a historic home located at 1471 Peterborough Road (New Hampshire Route 101) in Dublin, New Hampshire. This two-story wooden house was built around 1821. It was special because it was the very first house in Dublin to have brick walls on its ends!

The house was built by Captain Richard Strong. He was the grandson of Henry Strongman, who was one of the first people to settle in Dublin. Over the years, more parts were added to the house, around 1882 and 1910. Later in the 1800s, the Gowing family, who were well-known in the area, owned the house. Because of its history and unique features, the house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.

What Does the House Look Like?

The Capt. Richard Strong House is in eastern Dublin. It sits on the north side of Peterborough Road, just east of Gerry Road. It's a large house with three main parts that have been built over time.

The Oldest Part

The part of the house on the far left is the oldest. It has two stories and is made of wood. The front of this section has a brick end wall, which was very unusual for its time. The rest of this part is covered in clapboard, which are overlapping wooden boards. It has a sloped roof. The original front door is in this brick section.

Newer Additions

To the right of the oldest part is a taller section with two and a half stories. This part is also made of wood and has a pointed roof. A porch stretches across the front of this section. At the very end on the right, there's a smaller, one-story section. This part now has the main entrance, with large windows on either side.

Who Was Captain Richard Strong?

Captain Richard Strong, who built this house, was an important person in Dublin. He helped run the town as a selectman. He also served as a justice of the peace, which meant he could help with legal matters. Strong was even a state representative, meaning he helped make laws for New Hampshire. He also built another historic home nearby called the Richard Strong Cottage.
