The Captain S. C. Blanchard House is a historic home located at 317 Main Street in Yarmouth, Maine. It was built in 1855. This house is a great example of Italianate architecture in Yarmouth.

It was built for Captain Sylvanus Blanchard, who was a ship's captain. The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. This list includes important historical places in the United States. Today, the building is home to the 317 Main Community Music Center.

What Does the Blanchard House Look Like?

The Blanchard House is on the north side of Main Street in Yarmouth. It is a two-story building made of wood. The main part of the house has a special roof called a hip roof. It also has a small tower on top called a cupola.

The roof has deep edges with fancy carved decorations. These decorations are called brackets. The eight-sided cupola has round-arch windows. It also has small brackets under its own eight-sided roof.

The front of the house faces east. It has a beautifully decorated porch with its own hip roof. The side of the house facing the street has two large bay windows on the first floor. These windows stick out from the house. They also have decorated tops. The windows on the second floor have half-round windows above them.

Who Was Captain Blanchard?

The house was designed by Charles A. Alexander. He was an architect from Portland, Maine. It was built in 1855 for Captain Sylvanus Blanchard. He was born in 1778 and passed away in 1858.

Captain Blanchard was a ship's captain and also built boats. He was a very important person in Yarmouth during his time. He only lived in the house for three years. After he passed away in 1858, his son, Sylvanus Cushing Blanchard, took over the house.

Since 2004, the house has been used for music education. It is now known as the 317 Main Community Music Center.
