Creating Captain Blue: How He Was Made
Why "Blue"?
Gerry Anderson, who created the Captain Scarlet series, thought of Captain Blue early on. He decided that if the main hero was called "Scarlet," his partner could be "Blue." This made their codenames unique and memorable.
Finding the Voice Actor
The voice for Captain Blue in the original series was Ed Bishop. He got the role after a simple call from Sylvia Anderson, who was also a creator of the show. She liked his "smooth-talking" voice, which she felt was perfect for the character.
Designing the Puppet
The puppet for Captain Blue was designed by Terry Curtis. He actually based the puppet's look on himself! Sylvia Anderson asked him to change the hair color from brown to blond. This gave Captain Blue his distinct look with blue eyes and blond hair.
Captain Blue's Adventures and Personality
In the Original Captain Scarlet Series (1960s)
In the 1960s series, Captain Blue was born on August 26, 2035, in Boston, Massachusetts. His father was a financier. After studying at Harvard University, he became a pilot before joining Spectrum.
Captain Blue is known for being brave, hardworking, and a natural leader. He always respects the orders of Colonel White, his commanding officer. He often works with Captain Scarlet on missions. Even though Scarlet can't be destroyed, Blue often worries about his friend's safety. For example, in one episode, he tried to stop Scarlet from crashing into an enemy plane to save it.
Blue sometimes follows his own curiosity, even if it means bending the rules. In one story, he stayed behind at a military base that was about to be attacked by a missile. He wanted to help Scarlet find a way to stop it. He also left his base without permission to find Scarlet when he thought his friend had left Spectrum.
Captain Blue is also very active. He enjoys surfing, water-skiing, and deep-sea fishing. The show sometimes hinted at a romantic interest between him and Symphony Angel, another Spectrum agent.
In New Captain Scarlet (2005)

In the 2005 computer-animated remake, Captain Blue is still a brave Spectrum officer and a loyal friend. However, his appearance changed; he is stronger and has a rougher voice. This version of Blue prefers to act quickly and is more willing to use force against the Mysterons than his earlier self. In this series, he seems to have a romantic interest in Serena Lewis, who is the female Lieutenant Green, but their relationship is not fully explored.
