Captain Harlock and the Queen of a Thousand Years is an animated science fiction TV show. It was made by Harmony Gold USA. The show was created by Carl Macek. He combined parts from two different anime series by Leiji Matsumoto. These were Captain Harlock and Queen Millennia.
This wasn't the first time the 1978 Captain Harlock series was released in English. Another company, ZIV International, tried in 1981. They only put out a few episodes. Their first attempt was quite similar to the original story. But their second attempt changed the story a lot, making it more silly. People often mix up this early version with the Harmony Gold show. But they are not connected.
The story of Carl Macek's show is very different from Leiji Matsumoto's original works.

What Is the Story About?
Captain Harlock and the Queen of a Thousand Years takes place far in the future. Humans have traveled and settled on distant stars. But life on Earth has become difficult. People have become selfish and lazy.
The Mazone Threat
The Mazone are a race of living plants. Their home planet was destroyed. So, they plan to take over Earth. A brave scientist tries to warn everyone on Earth. But he loses his good name and his life.
Captain Harlock is blamed for the Mazone attacks on Earth. Even though he is an outcast, he wants to stop the Mazone. He plans to save humanity from this alien danger. He gets help from Princess Olivia. She is next in line to the throne of Millennia. The Mazone are supposedly allies with Millennia.
How Was the Show Made?
After their show Robotech became a hit, Harmony Gold wanted to make more TV shows. They looked for other Japanese animated series. Carl Macek, who produced Robotech, was asked what other Japanese shows he liked. He said he was interested in Leiji Matsumoto’s Captain Harlock.
Combining Two Shows
Harmony Gold got the rights to Captain Harlock. But they needed 65 episodes for TV. The Captain Harlock series only had 42 episodes. So, Harmony Gold bought another Matsumoto series, Queen Millennia. This was because they couldn't get more Captain Harlock episodes. It was then up to Carl Macek and his team to combine the two shows.
Unlike Robotech, they decided to mix the two series together. They didn't just show one after the other. They also changed the order of scenes. Clips from different original episodes would appear in a single American episode. This made the story very different from both original shows. The Queen Millennia TV series also had 42 episodes. So, many episodes from both shows were left out. The Millennia story even ended without a clear finish. This was to create the 65 American episodes.
Characters Never Meet
Even though the show's title has both characters, Captain Harlock and the Queen never appear together. This is because their original shows were set in different universes.
