Carbondale is a small, unincorporated community located in Liberty Township, Warren County, in the U.S. state of Indiana. An "unincorporated community" means it's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town.

History of Carbondale

Carbondale was known by different names in the past. Around 1846, it was called Clark's Cross Roads. Later, it was known as Free Hall.

The name changed to Carbondale in 1873 because people found coal nearby. The first house in the community was built in 1854 by John Thompson. Another house was built the next year by Andrew Brier. A church was built in 1867.

A post office opened in 1855 under the name Clark's Cross Roads, but it closed in 1858. Another post office opened in 1873 with the name Carbondale. This one stayed open until 1904.

Geography of Carbondale

Carbondale is located in Indiana, near the intersection of two main roads: U.S. Route 41 and State Road 63. It is about 6 miles north-northwest of Williamsport, which is the county seat.

The beautiful Big Pine Creek flows about a mile and a half east of the community.
