Carbonel: the King of the Cats is an exciting children's book written by Barbara Sleigh. It was first published in 1955. The story is inspired by an old folk tale from the British Isles called "The King of the Cats".
This book is the first in a series. It is followed by The Kingdom of Carbonel (published in 1961) and Carbonel and Calidor: Being the Further Adventures of a Royal Cat (published in 1978). Together, these books form the Carbonel series.
What is Carbonel About?
The story begins when a girl named Rosemary goes to a market. She buys a broom and a cat from an unusual woman named Mrs. Cantrip. Mrs. Cantrip is a bit messy and seems to be selling all her things.
To Rosemary's surprise, the cat starts talking! The cat, whose name is Carbonel, tells Rosemary a secret. He explains that Mrs. Cantrip is actually a witch. She is selling her magical items because she wants to try a new job.
The King of the Cats Needs Help
Carbonel also reveals that he is no ordinary cat. He is the true King of the Cats! His loyal subjects believe he is missing. This is because Mrs. Cantrip used a spell to capture him.
Carbonel cannot return to his throne until this powerful spell is broken. Rosemary decides to help him. She teams up with her new friend, John. They must learn a little bit about witchcraft themselves. Their goal is to find Mrs. Cantrip again. They hope she will help them undo the spell, even though she might not be very willing.
