Cardigan Donuts is a well-known doughnut shop and coffee place in Minneapolis, Minnesota. It was started by two friends, Justin Bedford and Jeff Bull. They opened their first shop in May 2017. This main store is located inside the Minneapolis City Center shopping mall.

Cardigan Donuts is famous for its fresh, daily-made doughnuts. They also offer yogurt bowls, hot and cold drinks, and kombucha. Many business people and those using the Minneapolis Skyway System enjoy their treats. In June 2022, a second shop opened. This one is in the IDS Center and even has an ice cream bar!

Delicious Doughnuts and More

Cardigan Donuts was founded in 2017 by Justin Bedford and Jeff Bull. They sell three main types of doughnuts. These are called "Classic," "Premium," and "Inspired" varieties.

The "Inspired" doughnuts are special. Their flavors change twice a week. This means there's always something new to try! Daniel Rosene, their first bakery manager, created many of these fun flavors.

Some exciting "Inspired" flavors have included:

  • The Rainbow Road: This doughnut is inspired by the Super Mario Kart game. It has rainbow dough, white chocolate frosting, candied walnuts, and cereal marshmallows.
  • Chicken and Waffle: This one has a unique "crackling chicken skin" topping.
  • Red Hot: This doughnut features Red Hots candy and cinnamon.

Other popular doughnuts include the Raised Bar, Raised Glazed, and Vanilla Cake. They also have options with homemade fruit jams.

Cardigan Donuts cares about not wasting food. Any baked goods not sold by the end of the day are given to local food banks or the Salvation Army. Besides doughnuts, they sell many drinks. You can find hot and iced espresso, coffee, teas, and kombucha. The City Center shop also has a gift wall. It sells cool items and clothes made by local artists.

Where to Find Cardigan Donuts

Cardigan Donuts has two locations in Minneapolis. The main shop in the City Center is open six days a week. It is closed on Sundays. Their smaller, second shop is open Monday through Friday.

Both Cardigan Donuts stores were designed by a local company called Smart Associates. The larger City Center store has a cool, old-fashioned look. It features a mid-century modern sitting area, bright orange walls, and a fireplace. There's also a special room in the back. It's designed for business meetings. Sometimes, Cardigan Donuts uses this room for "Donut Lab" events. Here, people can try new flavors and share their ideas.

How It Started

The first Cardigan Donuts shop opened on May 11, 2017. It's a big space inside the Minneapolis City Center shopping mall. You can find it on the second floor, also known as the "skyway" level.

Justin Bedford explained why they chose this spot. He said he worked in the skyway for a long time. He wanted to create a place for all the people he knew there.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Cardigan Donuts stayed open. They started offering a delivery service. This helped them become even more popular with local people. However, the restaurant did close for a short time in 2020. This happened during the nearby George Floyd protests.

On June 22, 2022, Cardigan Donuts opened its second, smaller shop. This one is inside the IDS Center's Crystal Court. It used to be a frozen yogurt shop. People were happy to see a doughnut shop return to Crystal Court. Another local doughnut shop had closed there in 2020. The new IDS Center location sells the same doughnuts as the main store. It also offers smoothies, homemade ice cream, and special desserts.
