Caribou Hide was a settlement for the Sekani people. It was given its name in 1944. Before that, it was sometimes called Metsantan. The Sekani people have their own name for this place, which is Wadzih Zùs. This means "Caribou Hide (village)" in their language.

The name "Caribou Hide" came from how some people described the Sekani. They called them "the Caribou Hide people." This settlement was one of the first places they lived in this region. The name "Caribou Hide" first appeared on maps in 1933. In 1952, "Caribou Hide" officially replaced the name "Metsantan" for this spot. However, the name "Caribou Hide" was no longer used officially after 1982.

What Happened to Caribou Hide?

By 1969, the buildings that were left at Caribou Hide were falling apart. Today, it is no longer an active community.
