Carl Brewer (March 8, 1957 – June 12, 2020) was an American politician. He served as the 100th mayor of Wichita, Kansas. He was also the first elected black mayor of the city.
He was chosen as mayor in 2007. He was reelected in 2011. Carl Brewer was a member of the Democratic Party. In 2018, he ran to become the party's candidate for governor.
Early Life and Education
Carl Brewer was born in Wichita, Kansas, on March 8, 1957. He finished North High School in 1975. He then went to Friends University for a short time. Later, he earned a degree in criminal justice from Southern University.
From 1977 to 1998, he served in the Kansas Army National Guard. He reached the rank of captain before he retired. In 1980, Carl Brewer married Cathy Brewer. They had four children together.
Political Career
Carl Brewer served on the Wichita city council from 2001 to 2007. He represented District 1. In 2004, he tried to become a state senator. However, he lost that election.
In 2007, he was elected mayor of Wichita. This made him the city's first black mayor chosen by voters. Before him, A. Price Woodard Jr. was selected by the city council in 1970.
On February 20, 2017, Carl Brewer announced he would run for governor of Kansas. He chose Chris Morrow, the mayor of Gardner, Kansas, to be his running mate. However, he was defeated by state senator Laura Kelly. After Laura Kelly won the main election, Brewer helped her transition team. She also asked him to join the Governor's Council on Tax Reform.
In 2019, he appeared in a commercial with Robert G. Knight. They asked people to write in Lyndy Wells for the 2019 Wichita mayoral election.
Death
Carl Brewer passed away on June 12, 2020, in Wichita. He had been battling an illness for a long time. After his death, the Wichita city council lowered the city's flags to half-staff. Governor Laura Kelly said that Carl "truly embodied all of the best qualities of what it means to be a Kansan." She added that he would be greatly missed.

Carl Brewer was a Catholic. He was also a member of Wichita's African American Catholic Council.
