Gardner is a city located in Johnson County, Kansas, in the United States. It is part of the larger Kansas City metropolitan area. In 2020, about 23,287 people lived there.

History of Gardner

Gardner was founded in a very important spot. It was where two famous old trails, the Santa Fe Trail and the Oregon/California Trails, split off from each other.

  • The Santa Fe Trail went southwest towards places like Santa Fe and Los Angeles.
  • The Oregon/California Trails went west, then north, leading travelers to the Kansas River valley and beyond.

Gardner was started in 1857 by people who supported Kansas becoming a "Free State." This meant they were against slavery. Most of these early settlers came from Massachusetts. The city was named after Henry Gardner, who was the governor of Massachusetts at the time.

Just four years after it was founded, Gardner was attacked by soldiers from the Confederate side during the American Civil War. This was one of the first attacks of its kind in Johnson County, and possibly in all of Kansas. The first post office in Gardner opened in 1858.

Geography and Climate

Gardner covers an area of about 10.21 square miles (26.44 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, with a small part being water. The main body of water in Gardner is Gardner Lake, located on the north side of town. A stream called Kill Creek also starts in Gardner and flows north to join the Kansas River.
