The Carl F. Schoverling Tobacco Warehouse is a really old building in New Milford, Connecticut. It was built way back in 1897. People sometimes call it the Flatiron Building because of its shape. This building was used to store and process tobacco. It was built by a big tobacco company. Today, it's one of only two buildings like it left from that time in New Milford. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982 because it's an important part of history.

What Does the Warehouse Look Like?

The old Schoverling Tobacco Warehouse is located just north of downtown New Milford. It sits on a piece of land that looks like a triangle. The building itself is made of wood and has two stories. It has a flat roof and its outside walls are covered with clapboard siding. Part of its brick foundation can still be seen.

The building is narrow at the front where two streets meet. Then, it gets wider as it goes back. The longest side of the building faces Wellsville Avenue. The side facing Housatonic Avenue was where they used to load and unload goods. Inside, you can still see the huge wooden beams that hold the building up. It even has a very old elevator that used to work using water power!

Why Was This Warehouse Special?

When this warehouse was built in 1897, it was considered one of the most modern tobacco warehouses in the whole country. It had all the newest features for its time. Back then, New Milford was a very important place for processing tobacco leaves. These leaves were mostly used to wrap cigars.

The warehouse was built by Carl Schoverling. His father and uncle were German immigrants who became very important in the local tobacco business. The building originally had extra sections that stretched out to the west. It was also built close to the Housatonic Railroad, which made it easy to move tobacco in and out.

What Happened to the Business?

The Schoverling family didn't use the warehouse for very long. Their tobacco business closed down in 1903. This happened because their tobacco crops failed several times. After that, a bank owned the building for a while. It was used as a tobacco warehouse again until the 1930s. Since then, many different businesses have used the building for other things.
