Carla Pedro Gomes is a Portuguese-American computer scientist. She is a professor at Cornell University. She is famous for her work in a field called computational sustainability. This field uses computer science to help solve big problems in the world. These problems include protecting nature and managing resources.

Carla Gomes has done a lot of research in artificial intelligence (AI). AI is about making computers smart. Her work helps computers solve difficult puzzles. It also helps them make good decisions. She uses computers to understand things like how to save forests. She also helps map resources in rural areas.

Education and Early Life

Carla Gomes studied math and computer science. She earned her master's degree in applied mathematics. This was from the Technical University of Lisbon in 1987. Later, she got her PhD in computer science. She completed this at the University of Edinburgh in 1993.

Career and Research

After finishing her PhD, Carla Gomes worked for five years. She was at the Air Force Research Laboratory. In 1998, she joined Cornell University. She started there as a research associate.

Leading Computer Science

From 2001 to 2008, she led a special group at Cornell. It was called the Intelligent Information Systems Institute. In 2003, she became a professor. She taught in different departments. These included computer science and applied economics.

Creating Computational Sustainability

In 2008, something big happened. Carla Gomes received a large grant. It was $10 million from the National Science Foundation. She used this money to create something new. It was the Institute for Computational Sustainability. This institute uses computer methods. It helps solve problems related to the environment. It also helps with economic and social issues.

By 2010, she became a full professor. She taught in computer science and information science. She also taught in the Dyson School of Economics and Management. In 2011, she was a visiting scholar. She worked at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study. More recently, in 2022, she started co-leading a new project. It is called the Schmidt AI in Science initiative at Cornell.

Awards and Honors

Carla Gomes has received many important awards. These awards recognize her amazing work.

  • In 2007, she became a Fellow of the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI). This was for her important work. She helped combine different ways of solving problems. These included AI and operations research.
  • She was also chosen as a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 2013. This honor is for top scientists.
  • In 2016, she won a special award. It was the AAAI Classic Paper Award. She shared it with Bart Selman and Henry Kautz. They won for their 1998 paper. This paper showed how to make computer searches faster. They used new ideas like randomization.
  • In 2017, she became a Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). This is a big honor in computing.
