Carla Savage facts for kids
Carla Diane Savage is an American computer scientist and mathematician. She is a professor of computer science at North Carolina State University. She also served as a secretary for the American Mathematical Society from 2013 to 2020.
About Carla Diane Savage
Carla Diane Savage is a brilliant mind who works with both computers and numbers. As a computer scientist, she studies how computers work and how to make them solve problems. As a mathematician, she explores the world of numbers, shapes, and patterns.
Her Studies and Research
Carla Savage earned her Ph.D. (which is a very high university degree) in 1977. She studied at the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign. Her main project for her Ph.D. was about how computers can solve problems faster by working on many parts at the same time. This is called parallel computing. She also studied graph algorithms, which are like step-by-step instructions for solving problems that involve networks or connections.
More recently, her research has focused on special codes called Gray codes. She also works on ways to efficiently create and arrange different kinds of mathematical objects. This field is known as combinatorics.
Awards and Recognition
Carla Savage has received important honors for her work.
- In 2012, she became a fellow of the American Mathematical Society. Being a fellow means you are recognized as a very important member because of your great contributions to mathematics.
- In 2019, she was named a SIAM Fellow. This award was given to her for her amazing research in computer science and a type of math called discrete mathematics. It also recognized her excellent service to the field of mathematics.
