The University of Illinois at Urbana—Champaign (UIUC) is a large and important university located in the state of Illinois, United States. It is the oldest and biggest campus that belongs to the University of Illinois system.

This university has many different colleges, offering more than 150 study programs. It is known as one of the best public universities in the United States. Many of its popular study programs for both new students and those studying for advanced degrees are highly ranked.

History of UIUC

The University of Illinois was started in 1867. It first opened its doors for students on March 2, 1868. Back then, it had only two teachers and a small group of students. In 1982, the university's name officially changed from the University of Illinois to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

The university has many different colleges and schools. These include areas like engineering, business, education, and arts. Students can choose from a wide range of subjects to study, from science and technology to arts and humanities.

Famous People from UIUC

Many famous people have studied or worked at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. They have become successful in areas like science, business, and even politics. The university is especially proud to have had many Nobel Prize winners connected to it.

One very famous person was John Bardeen. He won the Nobel Prize in Physics two times, once in 1956 and again in 1972. He was a teacher at the university from 1951 to 1991.

Another well-known person is Roger Ebert. He was a movie critic who became the first one to win a special award called the Pulitzer Prize.
