Carla Walker-Miller chose to study engineering because she wanted a good job that would help her pay for college. She earned a full scholarship and studied civil engineering at Tennessee State University in Nashville.

Carla Walker-Miller started her company, Walker-Miller Energy Services, in 2000. At first, her company sold different types of energy equipment. This was similar to the work she did before starting her own business.
Focusing on Energy Efficiency
Later, Carla changed her business to focus on helping people use energy wisely. This is called energy efficiency. Her company helps homes and businesses save energy. Because of this smart change, Walker-Miller Energy Services was named one of the fastest-growing private companies in America five times between 2007 and 2016 by Inc. magazine.

As the CEO, Carla Walker-Miller believes in fair treatment for her employees. She made sure her company pays at least a $15 minimum wage. She also has a rule that allows people with a past criminal history to be considered for jobs. This gives more people a chance to work.
