Carlo Lizzani (born April 3, 1922 – died October 5, 2013) was a famous Italian film director, screenwriter, and critic. He was known for making many different kinds of movies, especially crime films and historical dramas.

Biography
Carlo Lizzani was born in Rome, Italy. Before World War II, he started his career as a writer for films. He helped write movies like Roberto Rossellini's Germany Year Zero (1948) and Giuseppe De Santis' Bitter Rice (1949). For Bitter Rice, he was even nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Story.
After making several short films called documentaries, he directed his first full-length movie, Achtung! Banditi! (1951). This film was a drama about World War II and was well-received. He was also praised for his drama Chronicle of Poor Lovers (1954), which won awards.
Lizzani was also very good at directing genre films, especially crime movies. Some of his notable crime films include The Violent Four (1968) and Crazy Joe (1974). He also directed the crime-comedy Roma Bene (1971). His film L'oro di Roma (1961) told the story of the sad events when Jewish people were taken from Rome during World War II. For his 1968 film Bandits in Milan, he won a David di Donatello award for best director and a Nastro d'Argento award for best screenplay. These are important Italian film awards.
In the 1980s, Lizzani often worked for Italian television. He also led the Venice International Film Festival for four years, from 1979 to 1982. In 1994, he was part of the jury at the Berlin Film Festival, helping to choose the winning films.
In 1996, he directed the film Celluloide. This movie was about how the famous film Rome, Open City was made. For his work on Celluloide, he received another David di Donatello award for his screenplay. Carlo Lizzani passed away on October 5, 2013.
Legacy
In 2014, after Carlo Lizzani passed away, his family created the Lizzani Prize in his honor. This award is now part of the Venice Film Festival. It is given to Italian movie theaters that show a lot of high-quality films.
Personal life
Since 1949, Carlo Lizzani was married to the painter Edith Bieber. He met her in Berlin while he was working on the Roberto Rossellini film Germania anno zero.
