His first game for Athletic Bilbao's main team was on September 12, 1970. He played for a short time in a 1–1 draw against FC Barcelona.
Playing Through Challenges
Carlos played regularly for Athletic Bilbao in the years that followed. However, he also had to deal with several injuries. He helped his team, often called "the Lions," reach the final of the Copa del Rey (Spain's main cup competition) in 1973 and 1977.
In the 1973 final, he came on as a substitute late in the game. His team won 2–0 against CD Castellón. In the 1977 final, he scored one goal during the game. However, his team lost to Real Betis in a penalty shootout after the game ended 2–2.
Top Scorer and European Games
In the 1974–75 season, Carlos had his best year for scoring goals. He scored 19 goals in 32 games in La Liga. This made him the top scorer in the league, and he won the Pichichi Trophy.
On May 18, 1977, he scored a goal in the UEFA Cup final against Juventus FC. His goal put his team ahead 2–1 at home. However, Juventus won the trophy because of the away goals rule. This was his fifth goal in that European competition.
Carlos continued to score many goals for two more seasons before leaving Athletic Bilbao. In the 1977–78 season, he scored 16 goals. He stopped playing professional football in the summer of 1982 when he was 34 years old. His last team was RCD Espanyol. Overall, he played 234 top-flight games and scored 83 goals.
Playing for Spain's Youth Team
Carlos never played for the main Spanish national team. However, he did play one game for the Spain under-21 team. This match was against Yugoslavia in Elche, at the Estadio Martínez Valero.
Life After Football
