Carlos was born in Bilbao, a city in Spain. He was the third of ten sons in a big family. He played for Athletic Bilbao for 11 seasons. Before that, he spent one season with their reserve team, Bilbao Athletic. He joined Athletic Bilbao in 1969 from a nearby team called CD Getxo.
Early Days and Injuries
On September 12, 1970, Carlos played his first game for Athletic Bilbao's main team. He came into the game in the last few minutes. It was a 1–1 draw at home against FC Barcelona.

Cup Finals and Top Scorer

European Competition
On May 18, 1977, Carlos scored a goal against Juventus FC in the final of the UEFA Cup. This was a big European competition. His goal put his team ahead 2–1. However, Juventus won the trophy because of the "away goals rule." This rule means that if teams score the same number of goals overall, the team that scored more goals away from home wins.
Carlos continued to score many goals for two more seasons. In the 1977–78 season, he scored 16 goals. He left Athletic Bilbao in 1981.
