Carlos Mendieta y Montefur (born November 4, 1873 – died September 27, 1960) was a Cuban politician. He served as the temporary, or interim, President of Cuba for a period.

Mendieta was a strong opponent of the previous Cuban leader, Gerardo Machado. In 1934, he became interim President after a sudden change in government. This change was led by Fulgencio Batista. During Mendieta's time as president, important changes happened. Women in Cuba gained the right to vote. Also, the Platt Amendment was removed, which gave Cuba more independence from the United States. Mendieta resigned in 1935 because people in Cuba were still unhappy.

Early Life and Family

Carlos Mendieta was born on November 4, 1873. His full name was Carlos Mendieta y Montefur. He was born in a place called San Antonio de las Vueltas in Cuba.

He was married to Carmela Ledon. They had one child together, a daughter named Carmen Mendieta-Ledon. Carmen later married Calixto Garcia Velez. Carlos Mendieta passed away in Havana, Cuba, on September 27, 1960.

Becoming President

Before becoming president, Carlos Mendieta was known for being against the government of Gerardo Machado. Machado was a powerful leader in Cuba. Mendieta believed in different ideas for Cuba's future.

In 1934, there was a big change in Cuba's government. This change is sometimes called a coup. It means a group of people suddenly took control. Fulgencio Batista was a key leader in this event. After this change, Carlos Mendieta was chosen to be the interim President. "Interim" means he was a temporary leader.

Key Achievements as President

Even though he was president for a short time, Carlos Mendieta oversaw some important changes.

Women's Right to Vote

One major achievement during his presidency was giving women the right to vote. This was a big step for equality in Cuba. It meant women could now help choose their leaders.

Removing the Platt Amendment

Another very important event was the removal of the Platt Amendment. This amendment was an agreement that gave the United States a lot of influence over Cuba. It allowed the U.S. to get involved in Cuban affairs. When Mendieta's government removed it, Cuba gained more control over its own decisions. This made Cuba more truly independent.

Resignation

Carlos Mendieta resigned from his position in 1935. Even with the changes he made, there was still a lot of public unhappiness in Cuba. People continued to protest and demand more changes. Because of this ongoing unrest, Mendieta decided to step down. He was followed by José Barnet as the next interim president.
