Carlos Morales Troncoso (born September 29, 1940 – died October 25, 2014) was an important politician from the Dominican Republic. He served as the country's Vice President from 1986 to 1994. Later, he was the Minister of Foreign Relations, which means he was the main diplomat for the Dominican Republic, from 2004 until he passed away in 2014.

Early Life and Family

Carlos Morales Troncoso was born into a family with a history in Dominican politics. His grandfather, Manuel de Jesús Troncoso de la Concha, was a president of the Dominican Republic from 1940 to 1942. Carlos studied in Puerto Rico for a while. Later, his family moved to New Orleans, where his father, Avelino Eduardo Morales, worked as a General Consul. Carlos continued his education there.

Education and Business Career

Carlos Morales Troncoso studied at Louisiana State University in the United States. He earned a degree in sugar and chemical engineering. After finishing his studies, he started working at a sugar factory called Romana. This factory was part of a large company named Gulf + Western. Carlos was very good at his job. By the age of 32, he became the head of the entire company's operations in the Dominican Republic.

Political Life

Carlos Morales Troncoso entered politics when President Joaquín Balaguer asked him to be his running mate. This means he was asked to be the candidate for Vice President. They ran together in the 1986 presidential elections. He served as the Vice President of the Dominican Republic from 1986 to 1994.

During his career, he held several other important government jobs. He was the head of the State Sugar Council, which managed the country's sugar industry. He also served as the Dominican Republic's ambassador to the United States. An ambassador is a country's official representative in another country. Later, he became the Minister of Foreign Relations twice, first from 1994 to 1996, and then again from 2004 until his death in 2014. In this role, he managed the Dominican Republic's relationships with other countries.

He was also a leader in the Presidential Reformist Counsel. This group later rejoined the Social Christian Reformist Party in 2008.

Personal Life

Carlos Morales Troncoso was married to Luisa Alba. They had four daughters together: Ivette, Nicole, Michele, and Cecile. He passed away in Houston, Texas, on October 25, 2014, at the age of 74. He died from leukemia, which is a type of cancer.

Awards and Honors

Throughout his life, Carlos Morales Troncoso received many awards and honors for his work in business and politics.

  • In 1982, he was named "Businessman of the Year" by a group called Asociación Interamericana de Hombres de Empresa, Inc.
  • He was also named "Man of the Year" by the Dominican Chamber of Commerce of New York in 1982.
  • His university, Louisiana State University, recognized him as their most distinguished graduate in 1992.
  • In the Dominican Republic, he received two very high honors: the Order of Merit of Duarte, Sánchez and Mella and the Order of Christopher Columbus. These are important awards given by the Dominican government.

He also received special decorations from other countries, showing his good relationships with them:

  • From Spain, he received the Sovereign Military Order of Malta and the San Carlos Order.
  • From Peru, he received the Order of the Great Cross.

  • Doctor Honoris Causa of Humanities from Chicago State University in 1987.

Carlos Morales Troncoso also wrote several books. One of his well-known books is titled "De lo Privado a lo Público" (From Private to Public). This book shares his experiences working in both private businesses and public government roles.
