Carlos Manuel O'Donnell y Álvarez de Abreu (born June 1, 1834, in Valencia, Spain – died February 9, 1903, in Madrid, Spain) was an important Spanish noble and politician. He held the title of the 2nd Duke of Tetuan and was also a Grandee of Spain. Carlos O'Donnell served as Spain's Minister of Foreign Affairs four times, which meant he was in charge of Spain's relationships with other countries. He also worked for King Amadeo I.
Carlos O'Donnell: A Spanish Statesman
Carlos O'Donnell was born in Valencia, Spain, on June 1, 1834. His father was Carlos María O'Donnell y Joris. His uncle was General Leopoldo O'Donnell, 1st Duke of Tetuan, who was the Prime Minister of Spain many times.
In 1867, after his uncle Leopoldo passed away, Carlos inherited all his titles and wealth. This made him the 2nd Duke of Tetuan. He also became the 9th Marquis of Altamira and the 2nd Count of Lucena.
His Role as Foreign Minister
Carlos O'Donnell served as Spain's Minister of Foreign Affairs four separate times. This job is like being the country's main diplomat. The minister handles how Spain interacts with other nations around the world.
His terms were:
- From May 16, 1879, to December 7, 1879.
- From June 5, 1890, to December 11, 1892.
- From March 23, 1895, to January 19, 1896.
- From March 5, 1896, to October 4, 1897.
During his time as Foreign Minister, he faced challenges from the United States. The U.S. was pushing for Spanish Cuba to become independent. Carlos O'Donnell tried to resist this pressure and protect Spain's interests in Cuba.
Carlos O'Donnell passed away on February 9, 1903, in Madrid.
