About Carlos Padrós

Early Life and Business

Carlos Padrós and his brother Juan grew up in Madrid. Their family was from Catalonia. The brothers owned a shop together on Calle Alcalá. Some say it was a fancy clothing store for women. Others say it was a fabric shop.

The Padrós brothers also became very interested in the new sport of football. In 1902, the back room of their shop became the first meeting place for Madrid FC. This club later became famous as Real Madrid. Juan Padrós was chosen as the club's first president.

Starting the Copa del Rey

In 1902, Carlos Padrós became the president of the Federación Madrileña de Foot-Ball. This group managed football in Madrid. While in this role, he had a great idea. He suggested a football competition to celebrate the crowning of King Alfonso XIII.

This competition grew into the famous Copa del Rey. The first tournament was played in 1902. Five teams joined the first competition. These were FC Barcelona, Club Español de Fútbol, Club Vizcaya, New Foot-Ball de Madrid, and Madrid FC. Carlos Padrós himself refereed the final game. Club Vizcaya won the match, beating Barcelona 2-1.

Leading Real Madrid

In January 1904, Carlos Padrós took over as President of Real Madrid. He followed his brother Juan in this important role. On October 23, 1904, he arranged a special game. It was the club's first match against a team from outside Spain.

The visiting team was Gallia Club of Paris from France. They became champions of France in 1905. The game ended in a 1-1 tie. This match was held to celebrate the visit of the French president, Émile Loubet. During Carlos Padrós' time as president, Real Madrid won the Copa del Rey four times in a row. They won every year from 1905 to 1908.

In 1908, Carlos Padrós stepped down as president. Adolfo Meléndez became the new club leader. On April 13, Carlos Padrós was given a special honor. He was made honorary president for life.
