Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Carlotta Longo (born Carlotta Bresolin on 27 June 1895 – after 1959) was a brilliant Italian mathematical physicist. She was known for her important research in physics and later became a high school teacher in Rome.

Who Was Carlotta Longo?

Carlotta Longo was born in Italy on 27 June 1895. She was a very smart student who loved both mathematics and physics. She combined these two subjects in her work, becoming what is called a mathematical physicist. This means she used advanced math to understand how the physical world works.

Her Amazing Research in Physics

In 1918, Carlotta Longo completed her doctoral dissertation, which is a very long and detailed research paper you write to earn a PhD. Her research was connected to general relativity, which is Albert Einstein's famous theory about how gravity works and how space and time are connected.

Carlotta's thesis focused on something called electrostatics within general relativity. Electrostatics is the study of electric charges when they are not moving. Her professor, Tullio Levi-Civita, guided her research. Another scientist, Ludwik Silberstein, even described her work as a "geometrically elegant investigation," meaning it was a very clever and clear way of looking at complex physics problems using ideas about shapes and spaces.

Life After Her Studies

After finishing her advanced studies and important research, Carlotta Longo chose to share her knowledge with younger generations. She became a high school teacher in Rome, helping students learn about math and science.

She later married an Afro-Italian actor named Lodovico Longo. He had a small role in a film called Harlem. Carlotta Longo lived until at least 1959, though the exact year she passed away is not known.
