Carmarthen Park facts for kids
Carmarthen Park is a fun place in Carmarthen, Wales. It has many sports and play areas. One special part is a velodrome, which is a track for bicycle racing.
The Velodrome: A Special Bike Track
The velodrome is a big oval track, about 405 meters long. It's the main attraction at Carmarthen Park. This track first opened on Easter Monday in 1900. It has been used for bike races ever since! People believe it's the oldest outdoor concrete velodrome in the world that's still being used.
A cool thing that started here was 'pacing'. This is when a cyclist rides right behind a motorcycle. The motorcycle helps the cyclist go much faster by breaking the wind.
In 2015, people found that the velodrome needed repairs to be safe. It was fixed up and opened again in 2017. Now, it's ready for more exciting races!
What Happens at the Park?
Carmarthen Park is a busy place for everyone. The big grassy area inside the velodrome is used for many events. You can find festivals, games, and concerts here. There are also fairs, brass band music, and even historical re-enactments. Sometimes, circuses (without animals) visit the park. Schools and colleges use it for field trips and team-building activities too.
Every day, people of all ages enjoy the park. Young people love the skateboard area. Younger children have fun on the play equipment.
The park is built on a gentle slope that faces south. This makes it like a natural outdoor theater. It has beautiful old trees and gardens. Many of the park's original features from 1900 are still there. This includes the fancy iron gates at the entrance and the old bandstand. The Carmarthen Town Council takes care of Carmarthen Park.
