Early Life and Education
Carmel Stewart was born in 1957 in Tuam, a town in County Galway, Ireland. She went to school at the Presentation Convent in Tuam.
After finishing her Leaving Certificate (a big exam in Ireland) in 1975, she began studying law. She later studied at University College Galway. There, she earned degrees in Arts (BA) and Law (LLB). To become a barrister (a type of lawyer who argues in court), she studied at the King's Inns.
Legal Career
Carmel Stewart became a barrister in 1987. A barrister is a lawyer who represents people in court. In 2008, she became a senior counsel. This means she was a very experienced and respected lawyer.
She worked on cases involving important laws. These included family law, which deals with legal issues for families. She also helped people get legal advice for free. She was a board member of the Free Legal Advice Centres.
She also served as Vice Chairperson of the Employment Appeals Tribunal. This group helps solve problems between workers and employers. She was also a member of the Mountjoy Prison Visiting Committee. This committee checks on how prisons are run.
