Carme Montoriol i Puig (also known as Carmen Montoriol Puig in Spanish) was a talented Spanish writer, translator, storyteller, poet, and playwright. She was born in Barcelona in 1893 and passed away in 1966.

Her Life Story

Carme Montoriol grew up in Barcelona in a well-off family. Her family had many smart and creative people. For example, her father's side was related to Narcis Monturiol, a famous engineer. Her mother's side was related to Josep Puig Pujades, a writer and politician.

Carme was surrounded by books and art from a young age. She received a good education, which was common for girls from wealthy families at that time. She loved the theater and also studied music. When she was 20, she started a career as a concert pianist.

Around 1920, Carme became interested in writing. She wrote her first poems, and some of them were printed in magazines. Reading her poems in public made her want to learn more languages. She even taught some of the first Catalan language courses at the Pompeu Fabra Institute of Catalan Studies. Besides Catalan and Spanish, she learned French, English, German, and Italian.

Knowing many languages helped her discover great European thinkers and writers. She often translated their works just for fun! In 1928, she translated Shakespeare's sonnets into Catalan, keeping their original style. This was a big and difficult project. She also translated works by Pompeu Fabra, which impressed many people in Catalonia.

Carme was one of the first women to write plays in Catalonia. She quickly became well-known among critics and the public. She believed in equal rights for women and was active in cultural groups, giving talks and leading the Lyceum Club of Barcelona.

A Talented Musician

Carme Montoriol studied music with a famous teacher named Vidiella. She then improved her piano skills with Frank Marshall. Over the years, she became a concert pianist. She performed alone and with a trio. Her sister Lina Montoriol (or Jacinta Torner) played the violin, Montserrat Cassadó played the violoncello, and Carme played the piano.

They performed in many places in Catalonia, including the famous Palau de la Música Catalana. Critics praised their performances. Carme also played cello and piano sonatas with Aurora Bertrana.
