This community is part of the Coroico area, which is the main town of the Nor Yungas Province in the La Paz Department, Bolivia. The area is known for its moist tropical forest environment. Most of the people living here are Aymara people, and many of them work as farmers. The Story of Carmen Pampa
The community of Carmen Pampa began after the Bolivian War of Independence. Land was given to a person named Augusto Vicente Pijoán. The community was named "Carmen Pampa" in honor of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. This name was chosen by Matilde Belmonte, who was the mother of the new landowner.
Land Changes Over Time
After a big change in Bolivia called the agrarian reform, most of the land was given to the farmers who worked on it. The remaining land was sold to another person. This reform helped many local families own their own farms.
San Francisco Xavier High School
In 1962, a group called the Xavierian brothers bought land in Carmen Pampa. They wanted to open a high school for local students. The school was named Colegio San Francisco Xavier. Brother Niles "Nilo" Cullen was in charge. The school aimed to teach students about "Work, Study, Sports, and Religion." It became a place where many bright students from the church area of Coroico came to learn.
A New Leader and a New University
Brother Nilo left Carmen Pampa in 1983. After he left, Franciscan Sister Mary Damon Nolan became the principal of the high school. The Xavierian Brothers decided to close the high school in 1997. They left the school buildings and land for a new project.
UAC-Carmen Pampa: Higher Education for Rural Youth
In 1993, Sister Mary Damon Nolan started the Unidad Académica Campesina-Carmen Pampa (UAC-Carmen Pampa). This school is part of a larger university system in Bolivia. Its main goal is to offer college education to young people from rural areas. Students at UAC-Carmen Pampa can study subjects like farming (Agronomy), animal care (Veterinary/Animal Science), Nursing, Education, and Tourism. It helps young people get important skills for their future.
