Januaria Constantino Keller (born March 3, 1917 – died December 11, 1991) was a famous Filipina actress. She was better known by her stage name Carmen Rosales and her nickname Mameng. Besides acting, she was also a brave World War II guerrilla fighter.

Her acting career started before, during, and after World War II. She was very successful and had many fans. Because of this, she is seen as the first superstar of Philippine movies. Her stage name, Carmen Rosales, came from her hometown, Rosales, Pangasinan.

Early Life

Januaria Constantino Keller was born in Plaridel, Bulacan, in the Insular Government of the Philippine Islands. Her father, Pantaleón Keller Rosales, was half-Swedish. Her mother, Pilar Constantino y de la Cruz, was Filipina.

She first married Ramon Navales. Sadly, he was killed during World War II. Later, she married Jose “Peping” Puyat. They had one child together, named Cesar Rosales Puyat.

Acting Career

Carmen Rosales started her career in radio. She was even called the "Queen of Radio" in 1936.

Her first movie was Mahiwagang Binibini in 1938. This film was based on a play by Atang dela Rama. She then got her first main role in Arimunding-Munding in 1939.

Carmen Rosales became one of the most famous Filipina actresses in the 1940s and 1950s. Many people loved her sweet voice and her many song recordings. She was a big rival to another popular actress, Rosa del Rosario.

Sampaguita Pictures signed her in 1939. She often starred with Rogelio dela Rosa. They became a very popular movie pair, making 12 films together. After World War II, she starred in Gerilyera (1946). This movie, and Kaaway ng Bayan (1947), made her the most wanted actress in Philippine movies. After that, she decided to work as a freelancer.

In 1949, she became the highest-paid movie star in the Philippines. LVN Pictures paid her a lot of money to work with Rogelio dela Rosa again in Kampanang Ginto. She also starred in Camelia and Sipag at Yaman. Some of her most memorable roles include a heartbroken lover in Maalaala Mo Kaya (1954). She also played a club singer in Ang Tangi Kong Pag-ibig (1955).

She won her first FAMAS Award in 1954 for her role in Inspirasyon. She won another award in 1960 for playing a strict lady in Estela Mondragon. Her last public appearance was on the TV show Eye to Eye.

World War II Guerrilla Activities

During World War II, Carmen Rosales' first husband, Ramon, was killed by Japanese forces. Because of this, she decided to join a guerrilla group. She became part of the HUKBALAHAP forces. She was a skilled sharpshooter. To hide her identity during raids, she would wear a fake mustache.

The Original "Queen of Philippine Movies"

Many people consider Carmen Rosales the "queen of Philippine movies" in the 1940s. Her popular films helped other new actresses become famous. Actresses like Gloria Romero, Amalia Fuentes, and Susan Roces later became movie queens themselves.

Death

Carmen Rosales passed away on December 11, 1991. She died from kidney problems in Mandaluyong, Philippines. She is buried at the Loyola Memorial Park in Marikina.

Legacy

A part of Rosales, Pangasinan was named after her. This area is now divided into two barangays, Carmen East and Carmen West.
