Carmen de Alonso (1909–1993) was the pseudonym (or pen name) of Carmen Margarita Carrasco Barrios. She was a Chilean author who wrote many stories, especially popular ones for children.

Carmen Margarita Carrasco Barrios was born in La Serena, a city in Chile. She went to school in Ovalle and Santiago. She earned a special title called Profesora normalista, which means she was trained to be a teacher.

After her studies, Carmen worked as a teacher in Santiago. She also had several jobs at the National Library of Chile.

Her Writing Career

Carmen de Alonso started her writing career by publishing short stories. She wrote a lot for newspapers and magazines. For example, she contributed to a journal called Atanea. She also had her own column, "Al Pasar," in the magazine Margarita.

In the 1950s, she became very well known for her children's story collections. Two of her most famous books were Medallones de sol (meaning "Sun Medallions") and Medallones de luna (meaning "Moon Medallions").

In 1957, one of her stories, "La puebla," won the Mariano Latorre Prize for Folktales. This story was later included in her 1962 collection called La cita and many other books. In the early 1960s, her collections Érase una amapolita and La casita de cristal were also very popular.

Many of Carmen de Alonso's stories were folktales. These stories were often set in Chile's northern region. They talked about the lives of people in rural areas. She was known as one of Chile's best writers about country life. Her stories have been collected in many different books.
