Carnes is a tiny place in Sioux County, Iowa, in the United States. It's called an unincorporated community. This means it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Today, Carnes is mostly known for having a pizza restaurant!

The Story of Carnes

How Carnes Got Started

Carnes began as a small community a long time ago. In 1890, a special building called a post office opened there. People used the post office to send and receive letters and packages. It was an important part of daily life back then.

Who Was Edward Carnes?

The community was named after a man named Edward Carnes. He was a "roadmaster" for the railroad. A roadmaster was in charge of making sure the train tracks were in good shape. It's cool that a whole place was named after him!

Carnes' Population Over Time

Like many small communities, the number of people living in Carnes changed over the years.

  • In 1902, only 6 people lived there.
  • By 1914, the post office closed down.
  • In 1925, the population grew to 35 people.
  • By 1940, it had gone down to 13 people.

Today, Carnes remains a very small, quiet place in Iowa.
