Carney is a small, unincorporated community located in Sweet Grass County, Montana, United States. An "unincorporated community" means it's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town does. Carney is found along Interstate 90, a major highway, a short distance southwest of a larger town called Big Timber.
A Glimpse into Carney's Past
Carney used to be an important stop along the Northern Pacific railway. This railway was a big deal for transportation and trade in the past. The community was located right on Interstate 90, about eight miles southwest of Big Timber.
Back then, Carney had a train depot, which is like a train station, and a large elevator. This elevator was probably used for storing grain from the nearby ranches. These ranches and the small community around them relied on Carney as a central point. While the ranches are still active today, the original town of Carney is no longer there.
