Carol Lyons Meyers, born in 1942, is an American expert on the Bible. She is a retired professor of Religious Studies at Duke University. Professor Meyers studies the Bible, archaeology (the study of old things and places), and the lives of women in ancient times.
About Carol Meyers
Carol Meyers was born in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. She went to Kingston High School. Later, she earned her first degree from Wellesley College. In 1975, she received her Ph.D. from Brandeis University.
Professor Meyers started teaching at Duke University in 1977. She writes and teaches about the Bible. She also teaches about archaeology and women in ancient biblical times. Many people see her as a top historian and archaeologist.
Her Work and Books
In 1988, Carol Meyers wrote a book called Discovering Eve: Ancient Israelite Women in Context. This book was important because it was one of the first to look at the Bible from a woman's point of view. It used historical facts to understand women's roles.
She has also written special books called commentaries. These books help explain parts of the Bible. She wrote commentaries on the Book of Exodus, the Book of Haggai, and the Book of Zechariah.
In 2013, Professor Meyers was the president of the Society of Biblical Literature. This is a big group for people who study the Bible. She also helped revise the New American Bible in 2010.
Carol Meyers is married to Eric M. Meyers. He is also a professor at Duke University and studies the Bible.
Awards and Honors
Carol Meyers has received several important awards for her work:
