About Carol Meyers
Carol Meyers was born in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. She went to Kingston High School in Kingston, Pennsylvania. She earned her first degree (B.A.) with honors from Wellesley College in Wellesley, Massachusetts. Later, she received her Ph.D. (a higher degree) from Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts, in 1975.
Her Work at Duke University
Meyers began teaching at Duke University in 1977. She writes and teaches about the Bible, archaeology, and the role of women in ancient biblical times. People have described her as "one of today's leading historians and field archeologists." This means she is very good at studying history and digging up ancient sites.
Important Books and Contributions
Her book from 1988, Discovering Eve: Ancient Israelite Women in Context, was very important. It was the first big effort to look at the Bible from a woman's point of view. She used historical facts to understand women's lives back then. Meyers has also written detailed explanations (called commentaries) for parts of the Bible, like the Book of Exodus, Book of Haggai, and Book of Zechariah.
In 2013, Meyers was the president of the Society of Biblical Literature. This is a group for people who study the Bible. She also helped revise the New American Bible in 2010.
Carol Meyers is married to Eric M. Meyers, who is also a scholar and professor at Duke University.
